Univers Steven Spielberg
4 May 2026

There are directors who make films, and there are directors who have written the language we use to talk about cinema. Steven Spielberg belongs to the second group. Before him, the blockbuster was an accident, after Jaws, it became a grammar. Before him, you could still argue about whether popular cinema was capable of looking historical horror straight in the face, after Schindler's List, the question stopped making sense.

For anyone who needs a quick introduction: this is the director behind, among many others, E.T., the Indiana Jones trilogy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Munich, Lincoln and The Fabelmans. Three Academy Awards, a fifty-year career filming with barely a pause, and the rare distinction of being, at the same time, the most commercial director in Hollywood and one of its most recognisable auteurs. When future critics write about American cinema of the last half century, his name will appear in the first sentence.

On 12 June we open Disclosure Day, his new film. Simply screening it on its own felt like the easy way out. Spielberg has spent five decades in conversation with himself: absent fathers, the child's gaze in front of the unfathomable, the stubborn faith that a well-told story is already a form of resistance. To arrive at his new title without revisiting some of the earlier ones would mean giving up half the pleasure — and giving up what we do best at CineCiutat: screening films restored in 4K. That is why we have built three weeks of Spielberg Universe, a focused selection of the adult Spielberg, the one the Academy spent years refusing to take seriously until it had no choice. Three films to reach opening night with our eyes ready.
