There’s a job the audience never sees, and without it there would be no film: the work of whoever switches on the projectors before anyone arrives, checks that the sound is on and the room is at just the right temperature, waits for the credits to roll before opening the door, or makes the popcorn (among other things). We’re looking for someone who wants to know what it feels like to stand in the shoes of the projectionist in Cinema Paradiso, and who also enjoys the other side: welcoming people, recommending films with passion and walking them to their seat.
What you’ll do
The job moves between the projection booth and our bar, which is our customer service point and where we sell drinks and snacks. On a typical shift, you’ll open the cinema and start up the four booths: projectors, sound equipment, air conditioning and the playlists for each screening. You’ll welcome the audience and manage access to the screens. Once the screenings have started, you’ll check that everything looks and sounds as it should. If something goes wrong, such as a format that doesn’t fit, sound that isn’t coming through or a playlist that isn’t the right one for the day, you’ll be the one who fixes it. Between screenings, you’ll check the screens and restock the bar, and at the end of the day you’ll handle the technical close-down and cash-up.
Depending on the day, you’ll also take care of morning screenings, educational screenings for schools, the Thursday programme change, receiving copies and materials from distributors, and poster bookings. You’ll work in constant contact with the rest of the team through shared tools, and you’ll have a procedures manual and all the training you need to get started.
