Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a former film extra and Bogart admirer. After stealing a car in Marseille to go to Paris, he accidentally kills a police motorcyclist. Without any remorse for what he has just done, he continues his journey. In Paris, after stealing money from a friend, he seeks out Patricia (Jean Seberg), a young American woman from a wealthy family who aspires to be a writer and sells the New York Herald Tribune on the Champs-Élysées; she also dreams of enrolling at the Sorbonne and one day writing for that newspaper. In Europe, she believes she has found the freedom she never knew in America. What Michel doesn't know is that the police are looking for him for the motorcyclist's death.
