Five years after the end of the American Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a veteran of three wars, travels from city to city narrating news, talking about presidents and queens, glorious struggles, devastating catastrophes and exciting adventures that take place in any corner of the world. One day, on the plains of Texas, the captain meets Johanna, a ten-year-old girl kidnapped six years ago by the Kiowa tribe, and who during that time was raised as one of them. Johanna, against her will, must go to live with her uncles, a hostile and unknown place for her. Captain Kidd agrees to hand the girl over to her legal guardians. On the journey, both will travel hundreds of miles through an inhospitable nature, and will have to face enormous difficulties, human and natural, in search of a place they can call "home."
