Forastera is a word that, in Mallorca, works like no other. It doesn't quite mean foreigner and it doesn't quite mean outsider: it means something only those of us who grew up here fully understand. Someone who lives among us and who, for reasons nobody ever properly explains, still isn't from here. The odd part is that we don't use it for anything else. Only for people.

Lucía Aleñar Iglesias has made a 97-minute film about exactly that, without ever saying it out loud.

Cata is spending the summer at her grandparents' house when her grandmother dies suddenly. She tries on one of her dresses, half playing, and the game doesn't stop: the family lets her fill that empty space and nobody dares say a word. A sixteen-year-old girl playing grandmother in her own home. A forastera inside her own family.

It was shot here, in Alcúdia and Pollença, in Catalan, and we know much of the crew. It went to Toronto and came back with the FIPRESCI international critics' prize — the first Catalan-language film ever to win it there. Then came the Pilar Miró award for best new director at Seminci. With Zoe Stein, Lluís Homar, Núria Prims and Marta Angelat.
