Álava, late 19th century. As the Third Carlist War draws to a close, several women are found strangled on the outskirts of Vitoria. Ángela Berrosteguieta, the sister of one of the victims, arrives seeking justice, determined to prove that Juan Díaz de Garayo—an illiterate peasant—is responsible for the crimes. Meanwhile, Pío Pinedo, the chief of the constabulary, must contend with a lack of resources in wartime, as well as pressure from authorities who would prefer to keep the mounting wave of murders hidden.
